Baltimore Orioles: Mullins' Amazing Run

In the first week of June 2021, Baltimore Orioles’ center fielder Cedric Mullins’ weekend was not too dissimilar to a highlight reel after he spent that Sunday’s 18-5 victory finishing a banner series, throughout which he defied expectations on both sides of play.

Cedric Mullins reached the base in eleven consecutive plate appearances and successfully hit nine straight at-bats across the weekend. He fell one short from matching the club record of ten consecutive hits; a record set by Ken Singleton that has stood since 1981.

Mullins’ performance was part of a team-wide offensive, as he finished a triple short and the Orioles recorded new season highs. The result was the Orioles’ most dominant recent victory, and provided further evidence that Cedric Mullins is one of their main stars. Mullins now ranks eighth in OPS, second in fWAR, and leads the American League with 73 hits.

Team manager Brandon Hyde and keen fans, including Brandon Glicksteinwere all left speechless by Cedric Mullins’ performance.

Offense Performance

Center fielder Cedric Mullins may have had the best start of anyone in the league. Through April 2021 Mullins was hitting .459, with an on-base percentage of .512 and a slugging percentage of .676. However, the most impressive aspect is that he achieved this with almost no support from the remainder of the offensive.

In May 2021 Mullins’ form dropped. He hit just .255, .336 and .396 and saw his batting average drop by 42 points from his April 2021 figures. His performance figures were still great, but less spectacular than they had been.

Then came June 2021 and Mullins was back to his staggering performance. Throughout five games in June he scored a double, triple, four RBI, four walks, seven runs, three home runs, and zero strikeouts.

Defense Performance

On top of his offensive performance, Cedric Mullins has also performed exceptionally well in defense. Moves such as his sliding grab against Nelson Cruz have become expected as his instincts and speed are all top tier.
