The
Baltimore Orioles faced the New York Yankees in a series opener on August 2nd 2021.
Orioles
fans were delighted at a surprise win for their team who, historically, do not
fare well at Yankee Stadium. The Orioles achieved victory with a final score of
7-1, with four home runs in the nine-inning game.
Long-time
supporters of the Baltimore Orioles – such as Brandon Glickstein – would have been very happy with
this result.
History of the Baltimore Orioles
The
Baltimore Orioles were one of the charter franchises established in 1901 as part
of the first American League. The franchise started life in Milwaukee and later
moved to St. Louis, as the Milwaukee Brewers and the St. Louis Browns
respectively.
It was in
1954 that the franchise first moved to Baltimore and adopted the Orioles name.
In 1966 the team won its first World Series, claiming victory over the
incumbent Los Angeles Dodgers. A second World Series was won over the
Philadelphia Phillies in 1983.
In 1992,
Oriole Park at Camden Yards was opened and became the home of the Orioles.
History of the New York Yankees
The New
York Yankees were the original Baltimore Orioles. The franchise began playing
in the American league under this name in 1901.
The
franchise was purchased by Bill Devery and Frank Farrell, moving to New York
and changing the name to the New York Highlanders, before officially being
renamed as the Yankees in 1913.
As the New
York Yankees, the franchise has won the World Series multiple times, starting
in 1923. The Yankees have won a total of 27 Major League Baseball championships
to date.
Team Rivalry
As two of
the original American League teams, the Orioles and the Yankees have a
long-standing rivalry that dates back more than a century. Both teams have
nurtured some of the greatest names in baseball over the years, including the
famous Babe Ruth, who played for both teams during his career.
Until the
late 1990s there was plenty of give and take in the rivalry between the two
teams. However, in more recent years the Yankees have enjoyed much success
while the Orioles have been somewhat struggling to maintain their reputation as
a top-flight team. Fans will be hoping that the series opener result marks the
beginning of an Orioles comeback in 2021.
